Baseball Postseason Formats

 

Division I

  • The top 8 teams in I-A and the top 8 teams in I-B qualify for the playoffs
  • The 16 teams participate in four four-team double-elimination regional tournaments
  • The tournaments' pairings:

    1A, 4A, 5A, 8A

    1B, 4B, 5B, 8B

    2A, 3A, 6A, 7A

    2B, 3B, 6B, 7B

  • Each regional tournament follows the below format

    Game 1: Highest seed vs. lowest seed

    Game 2: 2nd highest seed vs. 2nd lowest seed

    Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner (winner's bracket final)

    Game 4: Game 1 loser vs. Game 2 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 5: Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner (loser's bracket final; loser is eliminated)

    Game 6: Game 3 winner vs. Game 5 winner (if the winner of game 5 wins, then a rematch is held with the winner winning the regional tournament)

  • The four double-elimination tournament champions then participate in two best of three semifinal series (highest seeded winner vs. lowest seeded winner and the other two winners)
  • The best of three Finals are held during third week of June

 

Division II

  • The top 10 teams qualify for the playoffs
  • The 10 teams participate in two five-team double-elimination regional tournaments
  • The tournaments' pairings:

    1, 4, 5, 8, 9

    2, 3, 6, 7, 10

  • Each regional tournament follows the below format

    Game 1: Second lowest seed vs. lowest seed

    Game 2: Highest seed vs. winner of game 1

    Game 3: Second highest seed vs. third highest seed

    Game 4: Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner (winner's bracket final)

    Game 5: Game 1 loser vs. Game 3 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 6: Game 5 winner vs. Game 2 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 7: Game 6 winner vs. Game 4 loser (loser's bracket final; loser is eliminated)

    Game 8: Game 4 winner vs. Game 7 winner (if the winner of game 5 wins, then a rematch is held with the winner winning the regional tournament)

  • The two double-elimination tournament champions then participate in a best of three Finals series held during third week of June

 

 

Division III

  • Top 6 teams qualify for the double-elimination playoffs
  • Game 1: No. 3 plays No. 6
  • Game 2: No. 4 plays No. 5
  • Game 3: No. 1 plays the winner of game 2
  • Game 4: No. 2 plays the winner of game 1
  • Game 5: Game 3 winner vs. winner of game 4 (winner's bracket final)
  • Game 6: Game 1 loser vs. Game 4 loser (loser is eliminated)
  • Game 7: Game 2 loser vs. Game 3 loser (loser is eliminated)
  • Game 8: Game 6 winner vs. Game 7 winner (loser is eliminated)
  • Game 9: Game 5 loser vs. Game 8 winner (loser's bracket final; loser is eliminated)
  • Game 10: Game 5 winner vs. Game 9 winner (if the winner of game 9 wins, then a rematch is held with the winner winning the championship) - held during the second week of June
