Softball Postseason Formats

 

    Division I

  • The top 15 teams qualify for the postseason
  • In the preliminary round: No. 2 plays No. 15, No. 3 plays No. 14, No. 4 plays No. 13, No. 5 plays No. 12, No. 6 plays No. 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9 (No. 1 receives a bye)
  • The preliminary round winners participate in an 8-team double-elimination tournament:

    Game 1: No. 1 plays the winner of the 8-9 preliminary round game winner

    Game 2: 2-15 preliminary round winner plays the winner of the 7-10 preliminary round game

    Game 3: 3-14 preliminary round winner plays the winner of the 6-11 preliminary round game

    Game 4: 4-13 preliminary round winner plays the winner of the 5-12 preliminary round game

    Game 5: Game 1 loser vs. Game 4 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 6: Game 2 loser vs. Game 3 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 7: Game 1 winner vs. Game 4 winner

    Game 8: Game 2 winner vs. Game 3 winner

    Game 9: Game 5 winner vs. Game 8 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 10: Game 6 winner vs. Game 7 loser (loser is eliminated)

    Game 11: Game 7 winner vs. Game winner 8 (Winner's Bracket Final)

    Game 12: Game 9 winner vs. Game 10 winner (loser is eliminated)

    Game 13: Game 12 winner vs. Game 11 Loser (Loser's Bracket Final: loser is eliminated)

    Game 14: Game 11 winner vs. Game 13 winner (if game 13 winner wins, the teams will play another game with the winner capturing the championship)

  • Championship game(s) is/are held second week of June

 

 

Division II

  • The top 12 teams qualify for the postseason
  • In the preliminary round: No. 5 plays No. 12, No. 6 plays No. 11, No. 7 plays No. 10, and No. 8 plays No. 9 (No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 receive a bye)
  • The preliminary round winners participate in an 8-team double-elimination tournament:

    Game 1: No. 1 plays the winner of the 8-9 preliminary round game

    Game 2: No. 2 plays the winner of the 7-10 preliminary round game

    Game 3: No. 3 plays the winner of the 6-11 preliminary round game

Division III

  • Top 8 teams qualify for the playoffs
  • In the quarterfinals: No. 1 plays No. 8, No. 2 plays No. 7, No. 3 plays No. 6 and No. 4 plays No. 5
  • In the semifinals: the winner of the 1-8 quarterfinal game plays the winner of the 4-5 quarterfinal game and the winner of the 2-7 quarterfinal game plays the winner of the 3-6 quarterfinal game
  • Best of three championship series is held during the first week of June
