Football Postseason Formats

 

 

Division I

  • The top five teams in each sub-division qualify for the playoffs (the top five in I-A and the top five in II-B); The first place teams play each other in the State Super Bowl on the first weekend of December; The remaining eight teams compete for the Division I championship
  • The quarterfinals are held the second weekend of November: 2A plays 5B, 2B plays 5A, 3A plays 4B, and 3B plays 4A
  • The semifinals are held on the following weekend: winner of the 2A/5B game plays the winner of the 3B/4A game and the winner of the 2B/5A game plays the winner of the 3A/4B game
  • The traditional Thanksgiving rivalry games are held the Thursday after the semifinals; If the opponents also happen to be opponents in their division's semifinal playoff game, the playoff game is not held the weekend before the Thanksgiving game but instead the holiday game will also serve as the playoff game
  • The semifinal winners meet in the Super Bowl played on the first weekend of December

 

Division II

Division III, IV

  • The top four teams in each division qualify for their respected division's playoffs
  • The semifinals are held the second weekend of November: No. 1 plays No. 4 and No. 2 plays No. 3
  • The traditional Thanksgiving rivalry games are held the Thursday after the semifinals; If the opponents also happen to be opponents in their division's semifinal playoff game, the playoff game is not held the weekend before the Thanksgiving game but instead the holiday game will also serve as the playoff game
  • The semifinal winners meet in the Super Bowl played on the first weekend of December
